As far as celebrity couples go, is there any pairing as iconic as   Goldie Hawn   and   Kurt Russell  ? The actors have been in a serious relationship since the ’80s… but it turns out their romance started way back.

The love story between Goldie and Kurt began in 1966, when they met at the beginning of their careers. At the time, Goldie was 21, five years older than Kurt, who was 16. Although they were an age difference and neither wanted to date actors, Goldie admitted that Kurt made a surprising first impression on her.

“I was 21 and he was 16, and I thought he was adorable, but he was too young,” she told Desert Island Discs on BBC Radio 4 in 2012, according to   People  . “Years later we met again and I liked him, and I remembered that I really liked him when I first met him. But we both said we’d never go out with another actor, so it just goes to show you never know.”  Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn in July 1983.  Fast forward to 1983,   and Goldie and Kurt met again during the latter’s audition for the film Swing Shift  .   This time, Kurt thought Goldie was stunning, but made a mistake and had to comment on her figure. Although he thought Goldie wasn’t going to like the line, she was actually flattered. They went on   their first date   soon after (which came with a heartwarming moment where they broke into a house Goldie was renovating at the time), and later fell in love during the filming of   Swing Shift  .

But as Goldie explained to   People   in 2017, there was one key factor that played into the development of their new relationship. Goldie was already a mother to son   Oliver Hudson   and his sister   Kate Hudson   (whom she shared with ex-husband   Bill Hudson  ), which meant she had to think about how they would react to Kurt dating their mom. Luckily, she didn’t have to worry about Kurt’s relationship with his kids (he had a son,  Boston   Russell,   with ex-wife   Season Hubley ).

Kate dio la bienvenida a su hijo  Ryder Russell Robinson  (a quien comparte con su exmarido  Chris Robinson  y cuyo segundo nombre es una oda a su padrastro) en enero de 2004, y Goldie estaba emocionadísima de ver a ella y a Kurt asumir esta nueva etapa de la vida familiar. “Me encantaría ser abuela”, declaró  a People  en 2003. “No estoy forzando la idea, pero sería divertidísimo”. “Una relación duradera no se trata del matrimonio”, declaró Goldie  a la revista Porter  en 2015, según  E! News . “Se trata de compatibilidad y comunicación. Y ambos necesitan querer que funcione… Estar juntos, dos pilares que sostienen la casa y el techo, y ser diferentes, no tener que estar de acuerdo en todo, aprender a lidiar con los desacuerdos. Todo es una elección”.

Goldie también le explicó a  CNN  en 2023 que no estaba emocionalmente preparada para la posibilidad de que el matrimonio pudiera conducir al divorcio y, eventualmente, al dolor.

“¿Por qué deberíamos casarnos?”, comentó Goldie. “Cuando no funciona, se convierte en un gran negocio… ¿Cuántos divorcios son divertidos? ¿Cuántos divorcios no cuestan dinero? ¿Cuántos divorcios te hacen odiar a la persona aún más que antes? ¿Cuántos divorcios han dañado a los niños?”

Claramente, Goldie y Kurt han logrado que su amor funcione. E incluso después de tantos años juntos, aún les queda mucho por delante. Como Kurt compartió durante la ceremonia de la doble estrella que compartieron con Goldie en el Paseo de la Fama de Hollywood en mayo de 2017, tiene suerte de tener a alguien como ella en su vida.
