Saab Launches New Initiative to Shape the Future of Defense and Security

Saab announces the launch of Skapa by Saab, a new initiative to accelerate the development and deployment of cutting-edge technologies and solutions. Skapa underscores Saab’s adaptive and forward-thinking approach, developing local intellectual property at a rapid pace. Skapa, Swedish for “to create, to make, to shape,” illustrates Saab’s dedication to innovative solutions and will help solve global challenges. Skapa will accelerate new solutions and redefine production methods. In conjunction with the launch of the new initiative, Saab will demonstrate enhancements to the test platform Enforcer 3.1, a converted Combat Boat 90, autonomous system. Skapa will utilize emerging technologies to further refine these and other systems in the U.S. Michael Brasseur, Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer at Saab, Inc., will serve as the General Manager of Skapa by Saab.

CB90 is a class of fast military assault craft used by several countries after being originally developed for the Swedish Navy by Dockstavarvet. Its name means Combat Boat 90 Half; the 90 refers to the year of acceptance (1990) and Half refers to the fact that it can carry and deploy a half platoon of amphibious infantry (18 men) fully equipped. Its lightweight, shallow draught, and twin water jets allow it to operate at speeds of up to 40 knots (74 km/h) in shallow coastal waters. Enforcer 3.1, a modified CB-90, is a workhorse amphibious landing craft for the Swedish military, which recently bought 18 of the company’s next generation version. Saab wants to take its proven platform and experiment with how it could be turned into an ISR asset using autonomy. The impetus for Enforcer-3 was a European initiative in 2020 that featured a number of companies collaborating on the future of autonomous technologies.

“Saab has a long, successful history of producing exceptional products, and Skapa will enhance those products with emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence and robotics, to make them smarter and ultimately solve operational problems and deliver solutions. Skapa is a symbol of our commitment to continuous evolution and excellence. We see the emerging threats around the world that need to be tackled, we know there is a need for new scalable solutions, and Skapa is our contribution to helping solve these challenges for and with our customers. We have the unique skill set, portfolio of products and people to drive the solution,” said Erik Smith, President and CEO of Saab in the U.S.
