The one extant family, the Manidae, has three genera: Manis, Phataginus, and Smutsia. Manis comprises the four ѕрeсіeѕ found in Asia, while Phataginus and Smutsia include two ѕрeсіeѕ each, all found in sub-Saharan Africa.
These ѕрeсіeѕ vary in size, measuring between 30 and 100 cm (12 to 39 inches). Some pangolin ѕрeсіeѕ that no longer exist have been documented as well. Pangolins possess substantial keratin scales that protect them, composed of a material similar to fingernails and toenails, making them the sole mammals known to have this characteristic.
