Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag sent a rallying cry to the fans after his side beat Newcastle 3-2 in their final Premier League home match of the season.

The Reds entered tonight’s game knowing they needed to beat Eddie Howe’s team to stand any chance of finishing in the European qualification spots in the Premier League. After a quick start from Newcastle, it was United who took the lead on the half-hour mark as Kobbie Mainoo slotted the ball impressively underneath Martin Dubravka.

Anthony Gordon equalised shortly after the restart but Amad’s fierce strike put the Reds back ahead on 57 minutes. Substitute Rasmus Hojlund looked to have wrapped up the three points with six minutes remaining but a brilliant stoppage time goal from Lewis Hall ensured a nervy last few minutes.

After the match, Ten Hag took the microphone in the centre circle to address the crowd at Old Trafford, as is tradition after the final home game of the season. Paying tribute to United’s supporters, the Dutchman said: “On behalf of the players, staff and myself I want to thank you all for the brilliant support during the season.

“As you know, it wasn’t an easy season, but one thing remained constant and that was the backing of you for the team. But this season is not over yet. First, we have to travel to Brighton where we go for three points and then we go to Wembley.

“And I promise you that those players will give everything to get that cup and bring it to Old Trafford. And we are sure you will be there supporting us.

“Thank you, you are the best supporters in the world.” Following the speech, Wayne Rooney echoed Ten Hag’s sentiment praising the United fans.

“I think the players and manager are very fortunate they have a set of fans like Man United fans,” he told Sky Sports. “You see the atmosphere tonight and the reaction at the end of the game.

“The season hasn’t been what they want, obviously it’s not over and they still have the FA Cup to fight for, but it shows what great support this club has got. They are still behind the manager and you can see that, they are right behind the players and they want the team to do well.

“They will keep going until the FA Cup final and hopefully as Erik has said there they can bring the cup back.”
