Ancient Egypt is well-known for its practice of mummification, but few realize the monumental scale in which they also mᴜmmіfіed animals. A staggering 70 million mᴜmmіfіed cats, dogs, birds, rodents, primates, sheep, fish, and even crocodiles, have been found in underground catacombs across Egypt.

The vast number of animal mᴜmmіeѕ that have been discovered in Egypt, many of which were carefully prepared and wrapped in linen just like human mᴜmmіeѕ, serve as a testament to both the religious and cultural significance of these creatures. Additionally, these mᴜmmіeѕ speak to the enormous industry that existed to provide offerings to the gods on a constant basis. From cats to crocodiles, here are 13 of the most fascinating and eerie Egyptian animal mᴜmmіeѕ.

The ancient Egyptians believed the sacred animals were the avatars or manifestations of their look-alike gods—canines, for example, were seen as the embodiment of the god Anubis . The dogs were thus thought to have been votive offerings to the jackal-headed deity.

Archaeologists have found innumerable unidentified bundles wrapped in linen. Through modern technology, such as computerized tomography (CT) scans, scientists are able to digitally peer beneath the wrappings to identify the animals that lie within. Crocodiles

Baboons
